Federal Way Celebrates 20 Candles on Its Cake
The city also successfully wooed some big regional projects, such as the King County Aquatic Center and the headquarters for World Vision. Sound Transit opened a $39 million transit center in 2006.
Federal Way will celebrate its 20th anniversary of becoming a city with festivities this weekend. Events will include tours, talks by past mayors, and the launch of the first of 20 volunteer projects. (As of Wednesday, the first project was still up in the air.)
The anniversary is a chance for leaders past and present to reflect. The weekend will focus on honoring the past, celebrating the present and “making our future brighter.”
Voters overwhelmingly approved the incorporation of Federal Way in March 1989 after rejecting proposals in 1971, 1981 and 1985. Cityhood became official one year later.
Since 1990, the city’s population has grown by nearly one-third from 67,554 to 88,580. That population also has become more ethnically diverse, with a large Korean-American community.
The upstart Federal Way was born out of complaints that King County foisted apartments, strip malls and other sprawl on the area without planning for roads and parks.
“I think things have changed,” said Mary Gates, who served on the first City Council and was the city’s third mayor. “I think there is at least some control about what we want around us.”
The city created and developed parks, from the spacious Celebration Park to numerous neighborhood parks. Roads were improved.
“Our roads are probably the best roads in King County in terms of the condition they’re in and the upkeep,” said Gates, 66, who was on the City Council from its inception through 2003.
But the traffic?
“As bad as anywhere,” Gates said.
“No one could foresee the number of people and cars that would try to use those planned roads,” said Gates, today the executive director of the Federal Way Symphony. “It was nobody’s fault.”
