Grandmother Grace married Morgan Elmore Shelton about 1920. He abandoned her shortly after my mother was born a few years later. Grace had another child, my aunt Betty by another man some years later. At that point, my great-grandmother Rosa took my mother to Honeygrove to raise her. I met Morgan a few years before he died. It was a strange meeting, with my mother and Morgan’s wife both present, arranged so that I could be introduced to my real grandfather. Everyone was overly polite and conversation rapidly died away. However, my mother always used the name Doris Grace Shelton as her maiden name, and I have so used it on many legal forms as well. My grandmother Grace was beautiful, having the same dark and classic features she passed to my mother. Her eyes were especially bright. She met and dated Harry Conklin about the same time my mother was dating my father. Although Grace was twenty years older than my mother, she looked much younger. She and my mother agreed to tell Harry and Owen that they were sisters. At some point the truth came out, but they each married their man at the close of World War II. Harry was an engineer for the Southern Pacific Railroad. He retired only ten years after the railroads made the transition to diesel-electric engines from steam engines. After my grandmother died, Harry withdrew to a small apartment in Glendale, California, near where I grew up in Highland Park. My brothers and I took all of our children somewhere once each month on what we called Uncles’ Day, a brilliant idea from my brother Lanny. One Saturday we telephoned Harry to tell him we would be over to pick him up in a half hour to take him and our children to Travel Town, an outdoor steam locomotive museum at Griffith Park in Los Angeles. He declined. We persisted. We arrived and persisted a little more. Finally Harry shuffled his feet ever so slowly to make his way, supported by two of us, to one of the cars. When we arrived at Travel Town, his snail’s pace began to pick up. By the time we were in sight of one of the locomotives, a 0-6-0 Southern Pacific steam engine, Harry was walking tall and at a normal pace. He reached up the bars on either side of the ladder into the cab and jumped in with the exclamation, “This is one of the engines I ran.” For many minutes he showed us what every valve and lever did and told story after story, including one where he and the fireman had to remove a bent drive shaft near Colton, California, and hammer it against a tree until it was straight again. He died a few weeks later.
