More widening part of HRM traffic plans
Wendy Bird worries about the future. Eighty home owners may lose some, or all, of their land if Bayers Road is widened. Bird and her husband Norman, both real estate agents, are among them.
“If you look at our home (as a buyer) and like it, but then I tell you, ‘Oh by the way, they might widen the road, but I don’t know when or by how much, would you still want to buy it?’ she asked.
“I wouldn’t.”
Halifax is an old port city with a lot of character, and a traffic problem. Some streets were designed over 100-years-ago, and it isn’t built on a grid like many modern cities. The downtown core is a peninsula with only a handful of access points for the 150,000 vehicles passing through daily.
The Regional Municipal Planning Strategy lists 18 projects to ease the strain on municipal streets. The widening of Bayers Road is one of them. The potential project was presented in two public meetings earlier this month. Few people in the audiences voiced a positive opinion about the project, likely because of the battle that erupted over road widening last year.
The Chebucto Road widening, which began last July, was supposed to ease traffic tension on the peninsula.
The widening happened after Halifax Regional Council approved changing the Armdale Rotary into a roundabout, another regional plan project. Traffic stalled on Chebucto Road during rush hour as cars waited to enter the rotary. Sometimes it backed-up several blocks, all the way to Connaught Avenue.
Home owners protested the widening with yellow signs designed to look like voting ballots. The choices – people or cars. Cars won council’s vote, and the $2.9 million widening finished in September.
The President of the Chebucto Road Residents Association says he doesn’t feel the widening improved traffic flow.
“If you build it they will come,” John MacDonell says. “Engineers are pretty focused on building to capacity, which encourages people to drive.”
