A few are spoiled, rich, demanding, delusional. You see, there’s one very tricky part about dog training for clients. The finished product depends on someone other than you: the dog owner , now Dylan the Doberman will stop meeting my friends at the door barking and spitting directly into their face at eye level. Nope. It takes more than just the trainer showing up, folks. It takes you. Here’s a story about a delusional client I once had in the wealthiest section of the Upper East Side. I walked into the huge apartment for our third session in three weeks. I came out of the elevator into the grand foyer with high ceilings, a fancy chandelier and an arched entrance to the dining room. I passed through the long, wide dining room with dark oak floors and a long banquet table fit for a king. I strode into the bright modern kitchen and finally settled into the playroom nook. This room is the home of the adorable, thirty-five-hundred-dollar, white Havanese puppy, Tad. I smiled at the sweet pup who ran to me with a wagging tail. Then the hairs on the back of my neck pricked up as my client entered the room. “What you’re teaching us does not work,” said a woman in her fifties who would be more attractive if she accepted her age. Her makeup was too much, her over-brightened blond hair was stinging my eyes. But I couldn’t avert my gaze downwards. An over-the-top display of cleavage was waiting there every time.
